For most of my copywriting career I never wrote for clients. I only wrote copy for my own businesses. Believe me… when it’s your own money on the line and you HAVE to make it work… or risk sleeping under a bridge and eating out of dumpsters… you figure out how to get good really fast.

It’s an experience I recommend to all copywriters.

I wrote copy for nearly 20 years for myself. I didn’t start freelancing until I sold my bodybuilding supplement business in 2012. I knew a lot about copywriting, but not much about attracting and managing clients. And boy oh boy, I learned those lessons the hard way. I felt like I had been thrown into the deep end of the pool. And I made all the mistakes.

Since then I’ve had some HUGE client-getting and client-managing breakthroughs. I’ve discovered what works, and more importantly what doesn’t work, to attract the best (and highest-paying) clients. And I know without a doubt that I can show YOU how to do the same.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

Let’s say you’re single and you decide that you want to date somebody. Now you could go to a bar, a church, the mall… wherever… and try to spot somebody you think you might want to date.

Sure, there are a lot of people at those places, but here’s the problem with that approach. You have no idea how many of those people are single. You also don’t know if any of them have any interest in dating. Nor do you know if they have any interest in dating you specifically.

So first of all, you have to sift and sort through hundreds or thousands of people to find which ones are single and interested in dating. Second of all, you then have to somehow convince them to go on a date with you. (And if you have a personality – and face – like mine, that’s no small feat.)

Or… you can go to a dating site that has thousands of people looking for dates, put up your profile… and start reaching out to the prime dating prospects that match your ideal “avatar.”

Doesn’t the second approach make more sense? After all, it’s a much more qualified audience… because they’re already looking for someone to date.

It’s the same with copywriting prospects. You see, just about any business could profit from a good copywriter. In fact, I have a proven system I give the knights in my Marketing Camelot that shows how to get local brick-and-mortar businesses as clients. AND not only get an up-front fee… but a performance-based royalty, too. There are hundreds and possibly thousands of opportunities like that right in your own backyard.

However, I have learned this the hard way… you can drive yourself insane trying to educate a brick-and-mortar business owner about the importance and value of direct response marketing and sales copy. Even then, few will ever really get it. And working with some of them will be like trying to push an 18-wheeler up the side of Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s like our dating analogy. You have to sift and sort your way through herds of ‘em to find the few smart ones who are interested in what you offer.

Or… you could just go find a business that already understands direct response marketing and is already using copywriters. That way you don’t have to educate and convince them about the value of what you do. Because…
